Pedalling with Purpose

Last Tuesday two EWCC members ventured out to support a family riding Lands End to John O’Groats. They are aiming to raise £50,000, to be split between two charities, PALS and Treloar’s, chosen by their daughter, Chloe, who has benefited from the amazing work they do.

The cycle ride is especially challenging for Chloe (17) who has cerebral palsy. She may not be able to walk but she loves to get out on the bike. She is undertaking the challenge on an adapted tandem (supplied by local company Freetrike based in Silverton) piloted by her dad, Tom.

To follow their journey and find out more about their cause visit Instagram.

Cyclo Cross Calendar is out

The CX calendar for the forthcoming season has been published.

Along with many of the regulars there’s a new course at Saltash School.

The EWCC round is confirmed as the 15 November.

MTB Racing at Gawton Gravity Hub

After a bit of a hiatus, occupied by the XCR races at Wheal Jane, XCO continues this weekend with racing at a new venue, Gawton Gravity Hub, Nr Tavistcok.

Apparently its a great course that has been test ridden by our very own Stuart and Monty Higgins.

Dawlish GP

Apologies for not mentioning this last time, but a big shout out to the EWCC riders who managed to fly the flag at the Dawlish GP on 17 July. Chapeau……

Social Rides and BBQ

Last Saturday saw the mass ranks of Exeter Wheelers take on three challenging rides. The usual Saturday Social group took on and extended Dartmoor loop, with 2,400m of climbing over 100km. A club run headed north to take on 100km including the Black Cat climb. A family ride headed down the estuary for ice cream at Dawlish.

The club BBQ followed the rides, with members enjoying a relaxing sunny afternoon at Exeter Squash Club. Thanks go to John Hare for organising the venue and then stepping in as chef, ably supported by Sous Chef Diogo, for the afternoon.

Cream First Crit Series – Round 13

Thursday evening saw the second of the EWCC hosted races at Westpoint. A strong field assembled with good EWCC representation, with a few even choosing to do both races on the night, quite a task with only 15 minutes between the two races. Chapeau to those who took on that challenge.

The racing was fast a furious with lots of changing positions in the 1/2/3 cat race. It was only at the end that a group of 3 riders broke free to take the podium spots. The cat 4 race saw two strong riders go off the front quite early, maintaining and growing their lead for a dominant display.

There are three rounds left in this years Crit series, all to be be held at Torbay Velo Park, so still time to unleash your inner racer…… (See below for more details of how to enter).

It was a great evening supported by club riders and volunteers. Thanks to everyone who turned out.

Exeter Wheelers Club Bulletin #5

Sorry about the short delay in getting this one out, your editor was enjoying a short break in the cooler temperatures of East Anglia! This week is slightly shorter than normal, but has some important news, especially if you enjoy barbecues!

This week:

Club Social and BBQ

Cream First Series

CX Training sessions

Club Social and Barbecue

This Saturday, 25th, sees the club social and Barbecue, at the Exeter Squash Club for an afternoon of food, drinks, chat, and sun. The club will provide some food, but if you have any special dietary requirements or don’t want to risk missing out please bring your own.

To kick the day off there will be three ride options, all finishing at the Squash Club (where showers and toilets will be available).

A 50k social ride going down the estuary path from Exeter to Dawlish and back.

A 100k hilly social ride over Dartmoor, going out via Moretonhampstead to Princetown for a cafe stop, and then back via Dartmeet, Widdecombe in the Moor, and Bovey Tracey.

A 100k club ride on the EWCC classic ‘Blackcat’ route, a steady, flat-ish route with a mid-ride effort up the Blackcat climb.

The hilly social ride departs at 8am from County Hall, the other 2 rides depart at 9am from the Squash Club. All rides aiming to return between 1pm and 2pm.

GPX files for all routes are available on the club website. Sign up on Spond.

Cream First Race Series

After a great event last Thursday, with super results for EWCC members (see EWCC Westpoint Circuit Race 1 – report – Exeter Wheelers CC for a detailed report and results), this week sees the second EWCC hosted event.

Although we previously said you could register on the day without providing details in advance, as we’re using timing chips it would really help speed up registration if you could send Gideon the following before Thursday:

  • Date of Birth
  • BC Membership Number
  • Which race you’re entering: 3/4, E123, or both

Thanks for your help on this — it really does make the sign-on process much smoother!

Cyclo Cross Training

These CX training sessions are being provided for women and youth riders to get you ready for the new season. Registration is open now, and we suspect they will be popular so if your interested get signed up soon.
