East Devon Evening Ten series, event 7 results, report and league table

Note – the next event is on Tuesday 14th and has been moved forward.

A warm evening for the latest ‘race of truth’ in the series. There was some breeze, but mainly crosswards, certainly not the tough westerly that so frequently challenge the riders on the two outward legs.

With an Open 25 taking place down the A38 on the S4/25 course luring riders away, tonight’s turnout was a disappointing 11 riders, but hey ho it was a convivial affair for the nice set of folk who did turn out, riders and officials alike.

Fastest on the night, and riding his first event on the course since pre-covid was Richard Gorst of Saddleback Racing, who elected to race on a gravel bike . . . a new category ! Fat tyres, but then, with the challenges posed to riders by the number of potholes on our nation’s roads these days maybe there’s somethng to be said for such a choice!

Richard’s time on 23:31 was highly creditable. Afterwards he was very complimentary of the organisers of the event, saying “In a world of constant change it’s lovely to come back to this event, this course, and find it’s the same lovely experience as when I rode 7 years and more ago, it’s lovely that these races are still ongoing”

In second place was Del Stafford, the fastest of the TT bike riders, with 24:15, and the smiley Jimmy Richards was 3rd half a minute or so behind with 24:41.

The fastest Exeter Wheeler was Stuart Pollard with 25:16. He might have done a 25:12 if he hadn’t dallied before the start and arrived at the starting timekeeper 4 seconds late. Stuart still leads the League Table. There will be prizes for the various age categories at the end of the series . . .

Next week’s race is set to be on Wednesday. However, should the England men’s team win their quarter final v. Norway on Saturday then they will be in semi-final action at 8pm on Wednesday,.so we would look to move the evening ten to Tuesday night, as long as we are able to gain police permission for this change. We will put info out here on the website and on the Exeter Wheelers facebook site (the ‘group’ one).

The final event of the series will either be on the old A30 at Pocombe Bridge near Ide, or more likely, on the Honiton Club Course, on the 22nd of July. Again we will put info out here plus on the facebook site.

These evening’s event was an Exeter Wheelers promotion, and the club would like to thank Ann Owen, Didier Lebatteux, Ken Evans, Diogo Pacheco, Phil Harris and Pete Bishop for turning out to run the event, bless you all.

Results from this evening –

And here is the current league table –

East Devon Evening Ten series, event 6 results, report and league table

The pesky Men’s Football World Cup interfered with the Evening Ten scheduled for the 1st of July, and should England progress to the quarter finals then that would see them playing on Wednesday 15th of July at 8pm, meaning we will have to decide what to do about the ‘Ten’ that evening. We will update this page when we know more.

Meanwhile a very warm late June evening on the 24th of June saw some good times despite the hear, or perhaps because of it, and an outing for Exeter Wheelers Luke Osborne who blew the field away with the only sub-22 minute ten on the course this year, flying around in 20 minutes and 40 seconds.

V50+ rider George Robb of promoting club CS Dynamo continued his good form with a time of 24:43, whilst series leader Stuart Pollard of Exeter Wheelers was just 6 seconds behind on 24:49 on his metal road bike.

Two female riders competed. Ayse Vahiboglu of EWCC was the faster, 25:31. Natalie Grainger of Royal Navy cycling rode a 26:58.

The next event is the 8th of July, full details of the series can be found by clicking here.

As we have lost two events we will be amending the number of results that will count towards the end-of-season league table. Again, we will update in due course.

Here are the results from the 24th of June –

Exeter Wheelers Club Bulletin #3

This week:

EWCC Hosts Rounds 12 and 13 of the ‘Cream First’ Crit Series

The Cream First Criterium Series has been supported by British Cycling with races hosted by local clubs across the county. Exeter Wheelers are proud to be hosting Rounds 12 and 13 at Westpoint Arena.

As a member of EWCC you have your race entry fee covered by the club. You will need a race license; if you don’t have one this can be purchased on the night for a small £10 fee. If you are planning to take part, and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible, please don’t sign up in advance via the BC Events page, sign up on the night and your entry fee will be sorted.

Details for Round 12 can be seen at Cream First Crit Series – Round 12 (Exeter Wheelers CC) Events – British Cycling

and

Round 13 can be seen at Cream First Crit Series – Round 13 (Exeter Wheelers CC) Events – British Cycling, but please remember if you are a club member you do not have to sign up via the BC event page.

It is worth noting that the BC event page currently has incorrect details for race options and timings. We understand this is being corrected, but there is no Go-Ride Race, the Open 4s race starts at 7pm and the Open 2/3/4 race is at 8pm.

To allow us to get an idea of numbers and know who is coming along, it would be appreciated if you could use Spond to indicate your intention to ride.

Remember – EWCC members have their race entry fees covered, so come along and enjoy the fun.

Coming up:

*Details for the 10 mile Time Trial series can be found at Evening 10 Mile Time Trial schedule – Exeter Wheelers CC

Looking Forward:

  • 18 October – EWCC Hill Climb, Stoke Hill
  • 15 November – EWCC Cyclo Cross, Escot Park

Finn at the Otley GP

Great to see Finley Webb out flying the EWCC colours again. This time he took the long trip to Yorkshire to ride in the Otley GP on 1 July.

Finn had a good race, but was caught up behind a crash towards the end that ultimately compromised his result.

Rides

Club Rides are going great. If you haven’t been out for a while come and join us.

There are plenty of options, and details of all rides can be seen here.

Devon Air Ambulance Cycle Challenge

If you enjoyed the Nello and want another challenge, whilst raising money for a good cause, why not sigh up for the Devon Air Ambulance Cycle Challenge, taking place on 12 September 2026.

There will be 30, 50 and 100 miles route options.

Cycle Challenge Long Route

Full details of the event can be found at Devon Air Ambulance Cycle Challenge 2026 – Devon Air Ambulance Trust

Holiday Snaps

Yes, it’s that time of year when we all pack our bags and head of to exotic locations for our holidays.

If you’re taking your bike or just hoping to get out for a sneaky ride whilst the kids are still in bed, send us a picture. The more exotic the location the better (although to be frank if your just popping down to Budleigh we’ll take it!). If you’re in club kit that would be even better.
