Four Firs 2024 Open Hilly Time Trial

The South West Time Trials season 2024 got under way today Sunday 3rd March with the Exeter Wheelers Open Hilly Time Trial on the Woodbury ‘Four Firs’ course.

The morning was very cold, with some ice on the roads as dawn broke, and no doubt some of the DNS’s came about as a result of riders concerned that ice might present dangerous conditions, but in the event all got round safely, as the rising sun warmed the air sufficiently by 8.01 am and first rider off.

Fastest was Elliot Collyer of the University of Exeter Cycling Club, who was one of three rider with sub-40 minute times for the 17 mile course, on 37 minutes and 59 seconds. Elliot was knocking on the door of a CTT Open win in events at the tail end of 2023, with a 4th, two 3rds and a 2nd in hill climbs, so no doubt he will feel pleased to finally win. Elliot used a road bike, and held off TT bike rider and last year’s winner Lloyd Copp of Okehampton CC by 24 seconds (38.23) with another road biker Aidan King of FTP 3rd at 39.29.

The Team prize went to Exeter Wheelers in the shape of Graham Turner, Tristan Kelsall-Spurr and Aaron Lawrence, all pleased with their rides for various reasons – Graham had suffered mechanicals in the Four Firs last year, Tristan was competing in only his 2nd time trial, and it was Aaron’s first time trial since he broke his arm in the first South-West Cyclo-Cross League race last September.

Other prize winners were:

Female:   Yvonne Farrell, Total Tri Training
Vet 40+:  Sam Thompson, Podium Addict
Vet 50+:  Del Stafford, Podium Addict
Vet 60+:  Mark Sanders, Mid-Devon CC

Following the event, prizes for the 2023 Devon Cup and SWCTT BAR were awarded. Photos from the today’s time trial and the various awards will be posted on the Exeter Wheelers Facebook

Thanks go to all the EWCC members who timekept and marshalled, and provided hot drinks and a fine selection of cakes, and we also thank Exeter Brewery for providing prizes in the form of their lovely organic Avocet Ale.
